Gilpin County’s new food pantry building

The Gilpin County Food Pantry is on the cusp of a much-needed transformation, with plans for a new facility taking shape. Recently unveiled site designs and floor plans, presented at the March 19, 2024, Gilpin County Commissioners’ work session, offer a glimpse into the future of this vital community resource.

The titles, “Community Center Annex Building” and “Gilpin County Support Center” have been offered as possible names for the new construction.

Among the highlights of the proposed new facility are several key features aimed at improving functionality, accessibility, and overall visitor experience. These include:

Dedicated Loading Bay: A road specifically designed to accommodate semi-trucks will lead to a loading bay, ensuring smooth and efficient delivery of food supplies to the pantry.

Distinct Entries for Different User Groups: To enhance organization and streamline operations, separate entries will be provided for each of the three user groups: the food pantry, commercial kitchen, and offices. This segregation of access will optimize workflow and minimize congestion within the facility.

Welcoming Outer Vestibule: An outer vestibule will serve as a welcoming space for visitors, providing shelter from the elements and creating a positive first impression of the facility.

Improved Shopping Flow: Recognizing the importance of a seamless shopping experience for pantry visitors, a separate entry and exit will be designated for the food pantry area. This measure aims to enhance the flow of traffic and ensure a comfortable environment for patrons.

These design enhancements represent a concerted effort to address the shortcomings of the current

facility and create a modern, user-friendly space that meets the diverse needs of the community.

Despite initial setbacks, progress has been made. In December 2023, the Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) approved a budget allocation of $1.3 million for the construction of a new food pantry. This marked a significant step forward in the quest for a more suitable and sustainable facility.

With cost estimates for the project expected in the coming months, County officials remain optimistic about the potential for additional grant funding to offset construction expenses. County staff are currently pursuing a $650,000 grant for construction costs and a $355,000 grant for internal fixtures, with hopes that these funds will help bridge the gap between budgetary constraints and the final cost of the project.

While the unveiling of updated site designs and floor plans marks a significant milestone in the project's progress, further details, including revised cost estimates, are expected to be released in April-May 2024. Until then, no further discussion by the Board of County Commissioners is anticipated.

Community members interested in staying informed about the ongoing developments regarding the Community Center Annex project, including updates on the Gilpin County Food Pantry, are encouraged to visit the Facilities Current Projects page on the County's website.

As the project continues to evolve, the BoCC remains committed to ensuring that the new facility not only addresses the immediate needs of the food pantry but also serves as a beacon of hope and support for individuals and families facing food insecurity in Gilpin County.

There has been some dissent from residents who claim that the County does not need the new building, but with thoughtful planning, strategic design, and ongoing community engagement, the future of the Gilpin County Food Pantry looks brighter than ever before.
