Dear Editor,
A few years back, when Larry was our librarian, he had some bumper stickers made. They read, “Gilpin County Library: Shelter from the Storm.” Before he gave me one, he looked at me very seriously and said, “Do you believe in this?” I said, “Yes,” and he handed me the sticker.
I do believe our library gives us shelter from the storm, whatever it may be. Coming into that solid, welcoming space, with the windows opening up to sky and trees, I feel safe. Coming into the rooms of books, I feel the company of all those other minds. So many stories, so many varied opinions, so many wonderful words, so much wise council! As my father once told me, “If I have books, I will never lack for friends.”
Our library is not just a wonderful resource, it is a good friend, always there for us, no matter what. Let’s pass 6A. Yes, it’s a tax, but the return on that investment is more than worth it. Let’s pull together as a community and keep our own “shelter from the storm” intact!
