Gilpin County government sponsored their annual paint recycling day at the county fairgrounds parking lot on Tuesday July 25 from 1 to 5 p.m. The county once again partnered with PaintCare Colorado to allow residents to drop off paints and stains for free. This year residents could pick up usable paints that others had dropped off.
PaintCare (paintcare.org) is a nonprofit that operates in 11 states and has recycled 5.8 million gallons of interior and exterior paint, stains, lacquers, metal coatings and waterproofing sealers since 2015.
By the end of the day, 101 residents had dropped off paint cans which amounted to twelve pallets of paint. PaintCare of Colorado will weigh the pallets at their processing plant to determine the total volume collected.
Other hazardous waste like paint thinners, pesticides, herbicides, fluorescent bulbs, home cleaning products and motor oils can be dropped off at the Boulder Hazardous Waste Disposal site (search term: Boulder hazardous waste) at 1901 63rd Street, Boulder (720-564-2251). The cost for Gilpin County residents is $45 per load.
