Gilpin County Commissioner Candidate: Joe Marr

This is my answer to all the questions worth answering. I would like this to not be edited please.

To all Gilpin County Residents, Neighbors & Friends,

I am Joe Marr and as you know, I am running for Gilpin County Commissioner this election. I have been asked dozens of questions about my thoughts on issues we have. There are several rumors running around our County about what I think or believe concerning these issues. I would like to set the record straight.

First, I am not against fire bans in our county. I am all about using science to determine when a fire ban is necessary. I am against including politics in fire ban regulations. Using a fire ban to keep people from enjoying shooting for practice or recreation is not appropriate.

Second, I believe that all stake holders in any given issue should all be invited to be involved in discussion about the issue instead of 2 or 3 people deciding what’s best for all of us. 25 years ago we would ALL come together to do what was best for Gilpin County. It didn’t matter what side of the aisle you were on. We can have that again.

Third, I believe all decision makers should have “skin in the game”. Policy should not be decided or even influenced by other cities or counties. What’s best for Boulder or Jefferson or Clear Creek counties is not necessarily what’s best for Gilpin. Also, I believe that as many as possible of County employees should have “skin in the game” as well and live in Gilpin County.

Fourth, I believe Commissioners, whose job it is to set policy (regulations, laws) and keep charge of the County budget should represent what’s best for ALL Gilpin residents, not just a vocal few. They should keep in mind what the Constitution of the United States of America has to say as well as the Colorado Constitution.

Fifth, I believe that any government panel or board does not have the right to and should not dictate or mandate any rules that infringe on a person’s free will or beliefs. I’m for personal freedom and personal responsibility. Medical decisions are up to you and your Doctor.

Sixth, I believe any government can and should structure itself to use its revenue to provide the services to its citizens. It is not always about getting more money. Most times it’s about identifying waste and inefficiencies in the system. I am all about balancing the budget, taking good care of the county owned equipment and facilities & having a proper amount of reserve for that ”rainy day” need.

Seventh, I have done some basic research as well as carefully listened to the statistics presented by our Sheriff before the recent “gun ban” was voted into law for County buildings. I have come to the conclusion that the Commissioners that voted in favor of this regulation have softened otherwise harder targets putting personnel in greater danger than if there was no regulation and signs. Criminals don’t pay any attention to signs or regulations, that’s what makes them criminals.

Lastly for now, we should be honoring our Country and its flag by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance before all meetings. Our Nation and the very historic 38 star American Flag hanging behind the Commissioners table deserve our honor and respect. Make sure you VOTE this election!! Respectfully, Joe Marr
