The Gilpin Archwood 4-H hosted a luncheon for veterans at the Gilpin County Community Center, 250 Norton Drive in Black Hawk, from noon to 2 p.m. on Friday, November 11. The event took place in the fairgrounds barn.
New VFW Commander Tara Nyikos, who took over from former Commander Doug Lupo, welcomed guests and had a table of information. Their quartermaster is Matt Commings.
She said her goals are to reach out to more veterans and find out what folks need. Do they need food or help to change a light bulb?
Harry Nimrod also sat at the table. He is helping the VFW with fly rod classes and was working on threading a rod. He had several rods displayed.
Also attending was Lewis Wagner who served in the Air Force and in Vietnam. Leon A. Pohl was attending the event and serves as the Gilpin County Veterans Services Officer. He has been with the County for five years.
Gilpin County Events Coordinator Krystal Meyer and a 4-H leader said the 4-H donated the food for the event, and the community center gave them the space in the barn. Her husband, Zach, is a veteran and served in the Marine Corps from 2008 to 2013.
Ruben Flores with the Colorado State University Extension helped supervise the 4-H members who were serving the food. They were Maddie Sutton, Katie and Molly Brannan, Flora Versailles, and Koby Meyer.
The menu consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs, vegetables, chips, cookies, and sodas.
Krystal Meyer said the next Gilpin County event will be the Winter Arts Festival at the Community Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on December 10 and noon to 4 p.m. on December 11.
