What is a BIOBLITZ?
A BioBlitz is an intensive period of observation to record as many species as possible. The result is a snapshot of the biodiversity of a specific place and can be used to help guide conservation, management, and research objectives.
A team of scientists led by CSU’s Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) will be collecting data on all kinds of plant and animal life near Tolland Ranch and Rollins Pass.
Biodiversity is the life support system of our planet - we depend on it for the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink. It has been empirically shown that native species richness is linked to the health of ecosystems, as is the quality of life for humans. This BioBlitz on the east slope of Rollins Pass, at the headwaters of Boulder Creek, will provide opportunities for data collection, as well as engagement for the scientific community, university interns and local community members.
What is a Colorado Natural Heritage Program?
CNHP is Colorado’s only comprehensive source of information on the status and location of Colorado’s rarest and most threatened species and natural plant communities. They share information with a wide range of stakeholders in partnerships that work to ensure Colorado’s biodiversity resources are not diminished. For more information about CNHP please see cnhp@colostate.edu
CNHP has an enormous impact on conservation in Colorado through these partnerships. CNHP is partnering with the Boulder Watershed Collective, Gilpin CSU Extension and others to update and improve upon existing ecological data which could inform a Conservation Action Plan for the Rollins Pass area at the headwaters of South Boulder Creek. This area has many historical, cultural and ecological resources including a rare Iron Fen.
Your Invitation
On July 21, 2022, from 3-6 p.m., we are hosting a public open house at Howlin Wind Brewery/Melt Coffee, 51A Main Street, Rollinsville. Meet the scientists and learn about the BioBlitz process and findings. Learn more about the unique biodiversity and cultural history of Rollins Pass. We hope to see you there!
