driving home
under the sunset
I watch a few hundred geese
fly over the highway
in a staggered formation
of crooked V’s
my windows are open
because the winter is summer now
and so I hear them too
the air is alive with color and noise
and the shadows of their flight
shadows like planes
shadows like bombs
shadows like falling gods
I imagine for a moment
the destruction of our world
not that it takes much
to imagine that
we are destroying our world
have destroyed it already maybe
see this gorgeous day
as proof of our destruction
but maybe the geese will remain
maybe the geese
will inherit the earth
once we are gone
maybe the geese know better
they still teach their children
how to fly
who was supposed
to teach me how to fly
