On May 18, the Nederland Middle-Senior High School (NMSHS) gymnasium was filled to capacity as family, friends, and community members gathered to celebrate the graduation of the Class of 2024. The event marked a significant rite of passage, symbolizing the transition from childhood to adulthood and the readiness of these young individuals to step into the adult world.

The Class of 2024, embodying their motto “Every now and then comes a class like 2024,” and represented by their class flower, the white and purple Alstroemeria, proudly marched in the processional.

As the graduates took their seats, the emotional weight of the moment was palpable, with parents tearing up and smiling wistfully. The Loquations delivered a skillful rendition of the National Anthem, setting a dignified tone for the ceremony.

Principal Gavan Goodrich welcomed the attendees and introduced the commencement speakers, Rovenna Yakubov and John Leventhal. Yakubov, who had taught the eclectic group of 30 students for five years or more, described them as “some of the biggest weirdos I know” who would undoubtedly make their mark on the world. Her remarks, filled with humor and affection, highlighted the students’ dedication as athletes and their readiness to face the world, earning laughter and applause from the audience.

Long-time basketball coach John Leventhal, honored to address the graduates, reflected on their unique journey through school, particularly noting the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Leventhal shared his own life story, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of life and the importance of embracing change and new experiences. His closing advice, “Many of life’s greatest lessons can be taught by a river. Don’t fight the current, dance with it,” resonated deeply with the audience.

Teaghan Hartman and Kyleigh McLaughlin delivered the Graduate Address, asserting their class’s uniqueness and tenacity. They highlighted their record participation in sports and artistic accomplishments in theater, band, and orchestra.

The Loquations’ performance of “Connected” by Brian Tate added a harmonious touch to the ceremony.

In a heartfelt second Graduate Address, Hartman and Polina Savich thanked the teachers and coaches who had supported their journey, recalling fond memories and influential moments throughout their education. They expressed gratitude to educators like Ms. Evans, Mr. Mabbett, and Mr. Gonzales for their kindness and dedication.

Principal Goodrich then took the stage to certify the graduates, praising their resilience and willingness to step out of their comfort zones. He commended their leadership and curiosity, noting their efforts with innovation, and their kindness during the sixth-grade outdoor camping experience, High Trails.

Senior Class Sponsor Daniel Wade presented the diplomas, accompanied by the Class Song, “Congratulations,” by Post Malone. The graduates’ names were called, each met with cheers and applause:
