On a raining and cool evening that felt like the end of summer, the Coal Creek Canyon Improvement Association (CCCIA) and United Power hosted the first end of summer barbecue on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at 5 p.m. and a dance at 7 p.m. at the CCCIA Hall, 31528 Highway 72. Organizer Norma Cassin said United Power reserved the facility, and the ladies with the CCCIA prepared the food.
The event featured an open mic and a barbecue menu of hamburgers, cheeseburgers, vegetarian and regular baked beans, coleslaw and potato salad. The dessert included chocolate chip cookies and apple pie.
Servers included Brenda Pollak and Kathy Elinsky. Attending the registration were Annette and Tom Lambeth, who are on the CCCIA Board and owners of the Last Stand Restaurant in Coal Creek.
Four people signed for the open mic including Adrian Pountney who started out the open mic and organized it. Each performer received 15 minutes and had to register in advance.
Cassin said it went well, and they had about 45 people in attendance at the barbecue.
Coal Creek resident, volunteer and licensed sawyer Linda Martin said about 30 people attended the dance. “We are just going to do that better. I don’t know when or how often but we will be looking into it,” said Martin.
CCCIA has been serving the Coal Creek Canyon since 1947. It is a nonprofit organization that has brought utilities and the fire department to Coal Creek and now provides a scholarship fund and community events at the hall.
