In the heart of our mountain community, where peaks touch the sky and valleys echo with children's laughter, the significance of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) resonates profoundly. As we embark on the journey of cultivating our youth's emotional intelligence and resilience, it is imperative to recognize the pivotal role SEL plays within our schools, families, and the broader community.
Nederland Elementary School exemplifies a commitment to the well-being of its students. Thanks to the collaborative efforts with TEENS, Inc., a dynamic non-profit organization, Nederland Elementary School (NES) benefits from a dedicated social-emotional learning program coordinated by Betsy Epp. This initiative is instrumental in ensuring that SEL principles are seamlessly integrated into the fabric of the school, reaching not only students and staff but also extending its influence to families and the wider community.
Current SEL initiatives at NES
TEENS, Inc., in partnership with NES, has worked diligently to incorporate SEL principles into the daily lives of students and their families. Through collaboration with the school’s administration and teachers, the SEL program ensures the effective implementation and assessment of the SEL curriculum. This collaborative approach extends beyond the classroom, strongly emphasizing reinforcing SEL skill development at home and throughout the community. Engaging in social media and newsletters, the program disseminates valuable resources, creating a bridge between the school and families.
The commitment to SEL is not confined to the academic calendar. The monthly parent education series, Mountain Strong Families, serves as a platform for preschool and elementary-aged parents to delve into the intricacies of emotional intelligence. These events, organized with free dinner and childcare, offer a space for shared learning and community building.
Furthermore, TEENS, Inc.’s SEL program is vital in promoting adult SEL competencies throughout the school community. Professional development sessions and orientations to the SEL curriculum are conducted to ensure that every Nederland Elementary School staff member is well-versed in the philosophy and strategies of SEL. This holistic approach fosters an environment where students and adults can thrive emotionally and academically.
TEENS, Inc.: A catalyst for positive change
Beyond the school grounds, TEENS, Inc.’s commitment extends to the broader mountain community. Active participation in community initiatives and ongoing support for diverse programs underscores the organization’s dedication to positive youth development. The SEL program, in particular, is a testament to TEENS, Inc.’s mission to be a dynamic innovator of positive youth development, engaging youth as partners in programmatic and organizational decisions.
The organization’s core values, outlined at www.teensinc.org, emphasize inclusivity, strong relationships with firm boundaries, and engaging various partners. The SEL program also embodies these values, creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all, both within the school and throughout the community.
As we navigate the peaks and valleys of life in Nederland, TEENS, Inc.’s social-emotional programs stand as a beacon of support and guidance. By nurturing the hearts and minds of our children, we lay the foundation for a future where emotional intelligence is as valued as academic prowess, creating a community that thrives on empathy, understanding, and resilience.
