Dear Team,
This message is as difficult for me to write as it is for you to read. Our 4-year journey together is ending at the conclusion of the school year. In late December, I was contacted about the principal position for Steamboat Springs High School. For my family and me, Steamboat Springs has been a second home. It is a place where we’ve spent a great deal of time camping and exploring. To have the opportunity to end my educational journey in Steamboat Springs was something that I could not ignore. After going through the interview process and being offered the position of principal of Steamboat Springs High School, the reality of what was happening hit home.
This community has embraced my family and me, I cannot repay all that you’ve given us, and my heart is hurting. Standing in the gym watching the boys basketball team last night brought me to tears. I know every name, their hopes and fears, and dreams for the future. This decision has exhausted every ounce of my energy. I want you to know that the work that we have done in four short years does not stop. The teachers are deeply invested in our CTE vision, and the district support is immense. Dr. Messier and Ginny Vidulich have been our biggest champions and they have reassured me throughout that they are committed to this community and this transition. Leadership will come and go, but when the work is driven by the students, staff, and community, then the work cannot be undone. I know this is unsettling for all of us, but I am committed to working with all of our stakeholders to ensure that we find exactly what we’re looking for in our next Nederland Middle-Senior principal. We have much to accomplish before the end of the year. You will have my 100% every single day. It has been an honor to serve this community. I leave behind only the fondest of memories. I will think of you often.
The search for a new, permanent principal will begin this spring and will include an opportunity for feedback from our students, families and staff. Look for more information in the coming weeks after returning from Spring Break.
Again, Nederland Middle-Senior High, and this community, will always have a special place in my heart.
Rick Elertson
Nederland Middle/Senior Principal
