Barbara Lawlor, Eldora. Chartreuse, turquoise and pink.
It’s hard to imagine that these colors were actually in vogue back in the 70s and 80s, but a glance at the West Wing Smokehouse deck at Eldora on Saturday would have convinced anyone that it was true.
Did people go color blind back in the day?
As the crowd came in off the hill on another sunny ski day at Eldora Mountain Resort, the band Malai Llama, out of Rollinsville, set the beat for the neon dancers to hustle, bustle and twist at the annual Retro Day celebration of spring and the week before EMR closes for the season. The Malai Llama was made up of former or current Eldora employees.
Two craft beer tents set up shop and the resort supplied a table of snacks for the ready to party skiers and snowboarders. EMR Group Services Sales Manager Drew Villa said it was the first time that Frozen Dead Guy Days did not fall on the same weekend and he was psyched to attend the event.
“We want to make this really big in the next couple of years, with over a dozen bands and a huge costume contest.”
Shorts and ski boots made for clumsy dancing, but Mike Chrzanowski and his friends, also EMR employees said their knees only got cold at the top.
Andrea Guthrie of Boulder did not get cold as she flounced around in her faux fur coat that she tossed into the crowd every now and then. Although she was way cool in her coat and large sunglasses she was no match for Kelsey Lesniak, 16, who was the Retro Dance Outfit Winner, in a onesie that showed a lot of bare skin.
Retro Day is a springtime ritual on the mountain that takes away the pain of knowing that the resort will close the following week.
