On Saturday, April 2, Eldora Mountain Resort and 10 Barrel Brewing Company collaborated to host the Trick Ditch snowboarding competition. General Manager Brent Tregaskis declared, “We’re thrilled to partner with 10 Barrel for the fourth year on this awesome event.” $10,000 in prize money was divided among the first three finishers in each division.
After paying the $45 entry fee, riders descended down the luge-like course flanked by high berms. On this day 137 entrants participated. The best combined time of two runs would win. Divisions were: Men’s Elite, Men’s 18-39, Men’s 40+, Women’s Elite, Women’s 18-39, Women’s 40+.
Cody Winters snatched top honors in the Men’s Elite with a combined time of 54.62 for $1,500. Second and third paid $750 and $500 respectively. Men’s Open (18-39) winner Kit Hedrickson pocketed $750 and Men’s 40+ victor Evert McEwan $500.
Money amounts paid to women and men were identical. With merely four women entered in the Women’s Elite race, chances of bringing home the bacon stood at 75%. Summer Fenton’s 1:04.21 was the best of the field. Terry Hunter took first in the Women’s Open (18-39) and Marcy Neerhof won the Women’s 40+.
A Burton snowboard plank was set up for catapulting bean bags into hula hoops lying on the snow. The band Los Cheesies kept the tempo upbeat with their Latin/rock bent as people gathered by the quarter pipe at the bottom of the banked slalom to take in the Men’s and Women’s Style competition.
Flair and degree of difficulty were considered as was the variety of tricks performed. Backs scratches, handstands, 360 and 540 degree rotations, and hand grabs were among the daring feats demonstrated by the aerialists. A team of three synchronized boarders favored the slightly smaller jump to the left from which they launched precise backflips, landing on the other side.
First and second place finishers in the Women’s Elite race Summer Fenton and Ellie Weiler switched positions with Weiler winning first place and a purse of $500. Sy Moran bested the other competitors in Men’s Style.
The days are short to enjoy Eldora Mountain’s runs and base area with closing scheduled for Sunday, April 17.
