Eldora was first known as Happy Valley when John H. Kemp located the town’s placer claim in 1891. By 1897, a mining camp was born. As the mining camp grew, its name changed to Eldorado.
After much confusion between Eldorado, Colorado, and Eldorado, California, the town’s name changed again to El Dora, and finally, Eldora. By early 1898, Eldora’s population grew to an estimated 1,300 residents. In 2021, fewer than 400 residents called Eldora home.
