Barbara Lawlor, Gilpin County. In their first home game of the season, the Gilpin Eagles football team treated their fans to a whopper of a win, beating Rocky Mountain Lutheran 52-6. What was especially rewarding to coach Dave Ball was that the Eagles wreaked revenge on the RML Eagles for their 44-8 win over Gilpin last year.
Lutheran scored in the first quarter which went unanswered giving them a 6-0 lead.
Gilpin’s quarterback Chase Boulter ran for two touchdowns in the second quarter bringing the score to 14-6 by halftime.
A long drive led the Eagles to a one-yard line effort for the touchdown, which was handled nicely by Bjorn Tomlinson. The two-point conversion was good and the score in the third quarter, with eight minutes to go was 24-6.
The RM Lutheran Eagles fumbled the ball leading to another Eagle touchdown and conversion for a 32-6 lead.
Boulter moved the chains to the Lutheran 20-yard line and Matthew Immordino ran the ball in for a touchdown and a two-point conversion and the Gilpin Eagles were ahead 40-6.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, RM was forced to punt and the Gilpin Eagles were soon set up their 40-yard line when Immordino saw his opening and ran the ball in for another touchdown. The conversion didn’t work and the score was 46-6.
Lutheran gained two first down and then fumbled the ball on their own 40-yard line. Gilpin recovered the ball and in the the next play freshman Angel Gomez evaded a few tacklers and streaked to the end zone to put the cap on the score, 52-6.
Coach Dave Ball said he and his team had been gunning for the RM Eagles since last year. “We have been working on our no huddle offense and wanted to make them run. That’s how we planned the game.”
Chase Boulter was named the overall Player of then game; Matthew Immordino was named the Offensive player of the Game.
The Eagles are now 2-0.
