Barbara Lawlor, Gilpin County. The Gilpin High School Eagles put up a good fight Thursday, December 18, in their home game against the North Park Lady Cats, but lost 31-39.
They began well, with Annabell Diekman shooting a three-pointer, Ariel Planck sinking a free-throw, and Delainey Lepro scoring for a 10-6 lead in the first period.
The Lady Cats regrouped and came out, their defense slowing the Eagles' offense. Gilpin's Cicely Lepro added two free throws and a field goal and the Eagles and the Cats were tied 14-14. It was score for score and by halftime, both teams had 16 points.
At 18-18, the momentum shifted to North Park and the game became physical, with both teams scrambling for the ball, often on all fours on the floor.
The Cats definitely gained in confidence and moved into a 28-21 lead in the third period and the Eagles never reached them again.
The loss puts Gilpin 1-4.
The next home game is on January 6, against University with JV starting at 4:30 p.m.
