John Scarffe, Gilpin County. The Gilpin County High School Eagles Girls’ and Boys’ basketball teams beat the Nederland Panthers on Tuesday, February 20, 2020, at the Gilpin Schools. The girls then won two games and lost won to win third place in the district and a playoff game against Simla on Friday, March 6, 2020.
During the boys’ game against the Panthers, Gilpin quickly took the lead. By the third quarter Gilpin led 41-15. Gilpin Coach Paul Hanson gave all his players time to play in the game. The Eagles held on to the lead for a win, 45 - 43. “It was a well - played game with good sportsmanship,” Hanson said.
Blake Boulter led scoring for the Eagles with 19 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 5 steals, 2 blocks.
Stephen King, 7 points, 3 assists, 4 steals.
Nolan Lindberg, 6 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks.
Trey Lindberg, 4 points, 2 rebound, 2 steals.
Triston DiPasquale, 4 rebounds, 1 steal.
Jimmy Immordino, 2 points 3 rebound.
Brogan Thomas, 1 point, 5 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block.
Damion Sonsino, 4 rebounds.
Alex Rodrguez, 3 points, 1 rebound.

Matt Marr, 3 points, 4 rebounds.

The Eagle girls beat the Nederland Panther girls by a final score of 33-13. They held the Panthers scoreless in the first quarter, 14-0, and won the second quarter 11-5. The second half was a defensive struggle, with the Eagles winning the third quarter 5-3. The Panthers fought back in the fourth quarter, outscoring Gilpin County 4 to 3, but it wasn’t enough, and the Eagles prevailed.
Senior Naomi Correa received Gilpin County Schools Player of the Game with 3 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals, 1 block.
Gilpin County Senior Alicia Johnson led the scoring for the Eagles with 11 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals.
Senior Nicole Adams scored 6 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals.
Senior Sarah Trujillo, 5 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal.
Freshman Abigail Smith, 4 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist.
Senior Lena Warren, 2 points, 3 rebounds.
Senior Joyce Jewell, 2 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block.
After beating Nederland, the Eagle girls went on to beat Highland High School on February 25 at Gilpin Schools by a score of 46 to 31 to qualify for the playoffs. The Eagle Girls won the first quarter 10-8, the second quarter 9-5, third quarter 13-10 and the fourth quarter 14-8. Freshman Abigail Smith received Gilpin County Schools Player of the game with 4 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal. Freshman Skyler Ramsey led scoring with 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, followed in scoring by Senior Jessica Willhelm, 11 points, Senior Lena Warren, 6, Senior Samantha Smith, 6, Freshman Camryn Ganz, 4, Senior Alicia Johnson, 3.
The Gilpin County varsity basketball team lost the game on Friday, February 28, a neutral playoff game against Dawson School in Lafayette, CO, by a score of 45-28. Dawson took a commanding lead in the first quarter with a score of 10-4, but Gilpin battled back winning the second quarter 13-18. Dawson won convincingly in the second half outscoring the Eagles by 14-7 and 13-4.
The Eagle girls won third place in the District by beating Loveland Classical from Loveland, CO, 61-29, on February 29. Gilpin County outscored LCHA in the first two quarters, 8-5 and 14-11 and then poured it on if the third quarter, 28-7, and the cruised to the win with 11-6 in the fourth quarter.
