Eagles battle against Burros and Panthers

Sarah Trujillo, Gilpin County. The Gilpin Eagles had an eventful weekend with two big basketball games, one against South Park and the other against Lake County.

Their first game on December 14, 2018, was against the South Park Burros. The girls’ varsity suffered a big loss with a final score of 20-49. The girls finished the first half with a close score of 16-17 but lost it in the second half. This game was an excellent learning experience for the girls’ team and they plan to head into their next games with more intensity. The boys had a more successful night with a final score of 46-35. Their leading scorer was Will Lorenz with thirteen points, six of which were from three-pointers. This was a big win for the boys and it gave them a lot of energy going into their game against the Lake County Panthers.

The game versus the Panthers was a tough loss for the boys. The game was close the entire time with the Eagles losing by being outscored in the final quarter of the game with a final score of 54-62. This game came down to the number of fouls for the Eagles, allowing the Panthers to be in bonus and make their foul shots.

The girls also went home with a loss of 32-52. Although the girls played better against the Panthers than they did the Burros, they still weren’t able to carry their intensity through the entirety of their game, causing them to lose.

These were two tough losses for the Eagles, and hopefully the girls will come back with a win against Estes Park on December 20.

Hopes are high that the boys will come back better than ever as well, after they recuperate for their next game on January 8, 2019 against Lyons.
