Barbara Lawlor, Nederland. Dr. Lawrence Eugene Maurer, known as "Doc" to the hundreds of Nederland people he brought into this world, celebrated his 100th birthday on Tuesday, July 29, on his porch in his home in Boulder. He began his medical career in 1942, charging one dollar for an office visit and three dollars for house calls, making the rounds in his old pickup truck.
Doc was the first Boulder County doctor to use penicillin and at that time there were fewer than 12,000 people in Boulder. He is the last living founder of 10 doctors who formed the Boulder Medical Center in 1949.
Outside of his medical practice, Doc was the team doctor for Boulder High School for over 25 years and still cheers for his favorite local teams. He has been a member of the Boulder Rotary Club for over 60 years and is a member of the Torch Club.
Doc and his wife Helen enjoyed coming to their cabin in Nederland where he still had many friends. His son Larry and his wife Linda live in Nederland where he treated many residents during his career. He eagerly attended Nederland events, especially the Miners' Days and is always good for a hearty laugh and a hug.
