Omayra Acevedo, Peak to Peak. This month’s free attractions take us to the town of Morrison, Colorado in Jefferson County. With its towering sandstone formations, historical wealth and something for everyone of all ages, you are sure to find something to do…even for free. Please keep in mind that I use the term “free” relatively loosely. Nothing, from my experience, in this lifetime is truly free. It will always cost you something.

Perhaps in gas, a snack or time. For argument’s sake, let’s use the term “free” in comparison to what one could spend if money were no object.
Our first complimentary adventure begins right in downtown Morrison. A leisurely stroll is just the beginning of your discovery of the uniqueness of the town. From themed coffee shops, cafes, taverns and restaurants to street wall art, ice cream shops, gift stores and even fashion boutiques, there’s plenty to see as you window shop your way from one end of town to the other. While you’re there, don’t forget to take a walk along the Bear Creek River on the South side of town. It’s a sight and sound surely to indulge in.
Your next option is my favorite and typically-free activity… hiking! If you’re up for another journey in Morrison, head West out of town and then immediately South on Highway 8 over to Mount Falcon Park. With over 12 trail options, you can spend an hour or seven bonding with nature and getting inspired by our glorious Rocky Mountains. Be mindful, as you may encounter walkers, hikers, runners, bikers and even a few of our four-legged friends, wild and domestic.
Let’s not forget the year-round local events and festivities. Whether you chose to spend money on food, drinks or souvenirs, well, that’s your prerogative, but quite a few festivals are free to attend. A couple of those free festivals take place at Red Rocks. Another easy attraction to find yourself enjoying are the musical acts that the local restaurants provide for your hearing pleasure, as well as original works of art for your visual pleasure. Anything can be fun, if you chose to make it so.
Now, we couldn’t really experience Morrison for all it’s worth without taking some time to explore Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater. Here, the fun times are for sure endless. From a visitor center that feels like a museum, to a John Denver tribute gallery and several more hiking options, you can easily spend an entire day there. I did. If you’re an early riser like me, you can also spend an hour or two exercising on the steps of the amphitheater. That’ll sure get you worked up and ready for a day you can only experience Morrison style.
