Discover Colorado: Outside of Colorado

Omayra Acevedo, Peak to Peak. Even if you’ve never been, you have probably at least heard the name Yellowstone. This week’s journey is taking us to Wyoming. Why? Why not? It’s our sister state and just like Colorado, it’s big on nature, cowboys, history and lots to do.

Many years ago, while camping in Wyoming, I spent a few hours in Yellowstone National Park. I haven’t been back since, but it is definitely on my bucket list. It was early summer and there were already tons of visitors in the park. Still, I managed to spot a grizzly bear with cubs, a black bear, a herd of bison, a yellow-bellied marmot, a nesting great horned owl and even saw Old Faithful Geyser erupt. I really thought I was in an episode of National Geographic.

There are nine lodges operating in the park, with more than 2,000 rooms. Only two of which are open during the winter season. If you decide to camp in Yellowstone, remember to keep yourself safe. Predators like wolves and grizzlies will not hesitate to take things (or little ones) that are left unattended. Though, I have heard stories of wildlife entering the lodges as well as campsites. Psst! Research before you go so that you’re prepared and, bring the camera!

Stop by any of the visitor centers to explore more about the park and learn about seasonal events. I’ve heard that Yellowstone is like the Disneyland of National Parks. In other words, remember to bring your patience. Follow the rules and this can turn out to be one of your greatest adventures. Did you know that Yellowstone is located in three states? Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. You could visit all three states on the same day without ever leaving the park.

Whether you plan to stay at a campground or a lodge, reserve early as they get booked very quickly. Yellowstone has been the inspiration for many documentaries, conservation efforts, art and family vacations. So, save your pennies, start your planning and research. When you’re ready, find your sense of adventure and go exploring outside of Colorado.
