Omayra Acevedo, Peak to Peak. “On the road again. Going places that I’ve never been. Seeing things that I may never see again.” Good ole Willie Nelson. How can you go wrong?! Last week, we traveled a little farther than normal. This week, we’ll go completely out of state. Why, you ask? Because we can!

Roughly five hours and 26 minutes from the city of Denver, is Moab, Utah. A magical land with formations so out of this world, you’ll think you’ve landed on Mars. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little, but hey, I’m a writer - I’ve been told that I’m expected to do that. Except for the part about how beautiful it is. No, sadly, I’ve yet to go visit this enchanted place, but I’ve been told by friends that it is a sight to see. It’s been on my bucket list for a year now... Thank heavens for buckets!
Our first option of things to do is a relaxing stroll through Moab’s business district, where you can enjoy a collection of restaurants, microbreweries, galleries and several unique mom-and-pop shops. One of the many things that has piqued my interest in Moab are the festivals. They host an annual Moab Music Festival, Outerbike festival, Red Rock Arts Festival, Moab Folk Festival and several others.

With two National Parks, over 2,000 natural stone arches, balancing rocks, thousands of square miles of incredible red rock formations and, of course, the Colorado River, there are plenty of photo ops and adventures to be had at either Canyonlands or Arches National Park. If for whatever reason you can’t go, spend a few moments looking up photos of these two treasures. I did, and one of my paintings has been inspired by those photos. I can’t wait to go!
Want to have your cake and eat it too? Here’s what you do. Reserve a seat on the Moab Dinner Cruise. Enjoy a meal during an evening boat ride on the Colorado River, as 40,000 watts of natural light illuminate Canyonlands to tell the story of early settlers. This is for certain a must-do for me. Someone told me it is an event you will never forget. Can’t stay up late enough? Try the Moab Daytime Jet Boat Tours. Want to stay on dry land? How about an UTV tour? As you can see, there are plenty of options.
Whew! Sounds like I’m going to need more than a weekend in Moab. Until then, maybe I’ll catch you on the road…
