Discover Colorado: Colorful Copper

Omayra Acevedo, Peak to Peak. Driving across the Rockies can be intimidating for some people. Especially, if they never travel outside of the “flatlands.” However, traveling through the Rockies is necessary if you want to experience some of the most scenic and memorable places in our colorful state.

I recall one of my first times driving through the mountains; I’m certain I was slightly under the speed limit. For this I apologize to all Coloradoans. At least I knew enough mountain etiquette to pull over whenever I got the chance, so that the locals could pass me and be on their merry way. The last thing I want to do is make anyone cranky.

Luckily, that was a very long time ago, and needless to say, I’ve grown accustomed to driving in the mountains and it is now one of my favorite things to do. So, are you up for a drive? If the answer is yes, then let’s hop on I-70 West and head about 75 miles outside of Denver. Remember to pack your patience as traffic can increase due to tourists, construction and of course my personal favorite, wildlife crossing. Yep! I’ve been stuck in traffic waiting for a herd of elk to cross the highway.

Speaking of which, don’t forget to offer them the right-of-way. Just as I had the courtesy to pull over to let others pass, please be thoughtful and allow our wildlife to thrive in the only home they have. Plus, it’s a great opportunity for photos. Now, where were we? Oh yes. From I-70 take exit 195. Follow the signs to Copper Mountain, and voila!

There, in this popular ski resort, you can find a plethora of things to do. Shopping, dining, relaxing, hiking and every adventure in between can be found at Copper Mountain. Yes, you can even find a place to spend the night or maybe two. On my bucket list is the Alpine Rush Zip Line. It is unique in that it allows two riders to go side-by-side at once as they fly over Copper’s West Lake.

Want to bring the entire family? There’s also a ton for all of you to do together. Try out the bumper boats, go karts or scenic lift rides. The views are spectacular no matter where you go or what you do in Copper Mountain. Your experience is sure to be a colorful one!
