Omayra Acevedo, Peak to Peak. Moose are known for their massive antlers, their sharp hooves, large size and sometimes even their temper, but not this one. A Spring chill was in the air as I walked through the town of Idaho Springs, Colorado. While window shopping, I entered a couple of shops to chat with some of the locals. Immediately after finding out that I was there to conduct an interview, they were all eager to voice their opinions.

“They’re the sweetest people I know.” “I really like that place.” “Oh, you’re going to love it.” These were some of the things people had to say.
Meet Mason and Asta Keene, owners of the Vintage Moose Tavern. From them I learned that Mason was an employee of the bar when it first opened in 2003 and the name was originally 10 Day Jacks. It wasn’t until 2013 that the bar was renamed. I was impressed to learn that Asta is a third generation Idaho Springs resident. In my opinion, who better to own the local hangout?
What do they love about running the Moose? They both enjoy interacting with the regulars, returning tourists, first timers and everyone in between. Mason and Asta seem to have always cared about their community, but since becoming local business owners, the change and impact they have on their community has only intensified. From hosting between 10-15 fundraisers a year, supporting other local businesses and always being a positive influence, it’s no wonder the tavern is adored by all.
The bar offers a tap that changes weekly, a Colorado Whiskey shelf, cocktails, a smokehouse sandwich menu and snacks. They might seem small, but while you’re visiting The Vintage Moose Tavern, you’ll realize it is big on character, ambiance and heart. You can catch a game on tv, sit in the back room in front of a fireplace, enjoy some mountain music - and let’s not forget the patio. Like them on Facebook to stay up to date on their upcoming events, happy hour specials and all things Moose.
It’s a great thing when you can visit a place and truly feel welcomed. A place considered to be the Face of the Rocky Mountains, the friendliest bar in town, a home away from home; a place that’s proof that there’s no need to be a massive business or have a huge ego to be successful or be loved by everyone. Take it from the locals, life is good when you’re at the Moose.
The Vintage Moose Tavern is located at 123 16th Avenue in Idaho Springs, Colorado. They can be reached at (303)-567-2375.
