Omayra Acevedo, Peak to Peak. Nestled at 7,040 feet not far from the town of Pine, in the foothills of Denver, is a rustic and historic Colorado saloon surrounded by any outdoor enthusiast’s dream of hiking, biking, climbing, fishing, hunting, kayaking and inspiring views. Don’t care for the outdoors? That’s okay. Come in and sit by the woodstove, enjoy an ale or a half-pound Buck Burger, listen to some live music or the sounds of Elk Creek as it soothes your spirit.

How do you get there? From the North or East, find your way south on Highway 285. Drive past the towns of Aspen Park, Conifer and Pine, head South on Elk Creek Road. The drive from here to the saloon is one not to be missed. Look out for the abundance of wildlife that will greet you as you make your way into deeper wilderness. I’ve made the drive more times than I can count, and an encounter with a coyote, elk, deer or raccoon never fails. But I’ve also been called a “wildlife-magnet.” Maybe I am.
Back to our drive. Be aware that the signs are small and you have to pay close attention to not miss the turn up toward Sphinx Park where your next Colorado experience awaits you. The Buck Snort Saloon. That’s where we’re headed. The parking lot is as small as the roads are on your way up. No worries, however, it’s difficult to pass your destination as you approach it. The first thing you notice is the sign out front and the ambience the location creates. It’s truly priceless.
Be prepared as you make your way inside. It’s a small structure, but there’s plenty that will catch your attention. Perhaps, it’s the bison on the wall, the pool table, the dollars hanging from the ceiling, the views out the window, the merchandise, the building itself or the smell of chili or a baked potato. Is your mouth watering yet? Are you about to jump in the car and gas up?
As always, call first before making the trip. As Coloradoans, we know the weather can change anything and everything, including our plans. This one is definitely worth waiting for. So, go! Go for the drive, go for nature, for an adventure or for the Moose Drool or Antler Ale. Come feel the old-west heighten your senses at The Buck Snort Saloon.
