As a kid Dave Gibson loved to draw. So much so that on a report card his fifth grade teacher commented that Dave would rather draw then complete his assignments.
In the early 80s Dave moved to Colorado to attend the Colorado Institute of Art. However, life has a way of not always going the way we planned and he took his roofing skills and started his own business, Top Coverage Roofing.
He first moved to the Nederland area in 1990. He lived in a shack with no electricity or water for a time. He did a lot of fishing and became very interested in wildlife photography. In the winters he would travel to places like New Mexico and Texas always looking to improve his photography skills.
Beginning in 2005, Dave started taking photos and writing for the Gilpin County News which later became the Weekly Register-Call. He worked there for 14 years. He spent 11 years with the Mountain Neighbor writing a nature column. Dave has been a reporter and photographer for The Mountain-Ear for two and a half years.
Dave covers festivals and sporting events in the area for The Mountain- Ear. He also writes about his wildlife adventure travels. His words and his photography takes us on the journey with him. Dave says, “Taking the pictures is the most fun, but the writing can sometimes be the most rewarding. I don’t feel I have a story until I’ve secured the pictures.”
In May 2021 Dave was presented two awards by the Colorado Press Association. They were First Place in Best Photography Portfolio and First Place Best Sports or Sports Event Story Awards for newspapers in the Class 3 division.
Dave says that it is a pleasure to work for The Mountain-Ear whose ownership is dedicated to a quality product and so dedicated to the community.
