The Casual Enormity of Adam Palmer: A new Colorado-made documentary celebrating the life, values, and enduring influence of community leader Adam Palmer will be shown at The Backdoor Theatre of Nederland, Colorado on August 13 at 7 p.m. This special screening includes a post-film conversation with local leaders focused on building resilient and sustainable mountain communities. Gilpin County Library Fen and Old Growth Wetland: Join local botanist and ecologist Rea Orthner Wrobel for a tour of the wettest library topic you never knew you’d love. This onsite tour of the Gilpin County Library Fen will cover fen ecology, hydrology, peat formation, rare species, and why these squishy landscapes are ecological gold mines. Please bring shoes that you can get wet or rubber boots, and dress for the weather. Please register at gilpinlibrary.org. Mountain mycology - MRS guided walk: Join a naturalist for a guided walk around the campus of the Mountain Research Station (MRS). Ph.D. student Candice Perrotta will lead us on a fungi foray in the subalpine forest. Explore seasonal wetlands and learn about the mushrooms of the Colorado mountains. The walk starts at 10 a.m. and will last for about 2 hours. We only have space for 20 people. Sign up is required to reserve your spot. Botanical Illustration: Learn techniques to help you depict what you see in the natural world, from delicate leaf veins to vibrant color! We’ll meet at the Red Barn Group Picnic Area in Golden Gate Canyon State Park (9467 Drew Hill Road, Golden, CO 80403), which is just down the road from the main Visitor Center. We'll have a brief presentation, then demonstrate techniques, and make beautiful botanical art together. All materials will be provided, and no prior experience necessary! Please arrive a few minutes early, to get set up at an art station before the class begins. A park pass is required for this event. Anniversary Open House at the Mountain Research Station: Calling all science lovers! The Open House at the Mountain Research Station is your chance to visit Colorado's premier alpine field science facility, run by INSTAAR. The day will feature guided field trips, hands-on activities, dinner, and a keynote from eminent ecologist Katharine Suding. You can come for one session only or stay for the whole day. Caribou Cemetery “Lure and Lore of a Colorado Mountain Town”: Caribou, at nearly 10,000 feet in western Boulder County, Colorado, once was a thriving silver mining town. Its history lives on with the remains of those buried in the Caribou Cemetery, now quiet and sadly neglected. The Friends of Caribou Cemetery, with the Nederland Area Historic Society, have been working to preserve the site, identify the graves, and return dignity and respect to the cemetery's men, women, and children.
