The Coal Creek Canyon Improvement Association celebrated Cinco de Mayo with a party on May 4, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the CCCIA Hall at 31528 Highway 72. Norma Cassin served as hostess for the event.

Cassin said, “We are celebrating with our community.” Adult CCCIA members got a taco dinner for $10; non-members paid $15. The menu included taco meat, wheat and white tortillas, cheese, sour cream, tomatoes, and rice and beans.

Servers were Sue Shelton, Janice Batt and Cindy Berginz, whose husband, Chuck, is the treasurer and was selling plates for the event.

By about 5:30 p.m. the hall was packed with folks enjoying the tacos and a beer. Norma Cassin reported after the event that around 55 people attended, and the organization raised almost $300 for the scholarship fund.

A poster put together by the Coal Creek Canyon Cub Scout Pack 51 informed all the partygoers that Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican Army’s May 1862 defeat over France at the Battle of Pueblo.

It is not Mexico Independence Day, which is September 16.

The next event at the Hall will be Mother's Day Pancakes on Saturday, May 11, from 7 to 11 a.m. Contact Bruce Goodwin at 303-642-0529 for more information. Proceeds will again go to the scholarship fund.
