ALLENSPARK - Cheryl Pennington is a photographer who practices a very old art form: hand-painting black and white photos with translucent oils, creating an amalgam of old and new with an appearance clearly different from those who color with computers.
“I enjoy taking my own photos in black and white, and I often hand color them,” she says. She has been involved in hand-coloring photos for numerous books and articles about Colorado.
The translucent photo oils were invented in England in the 1880s because there were no color films. The appearance of these hand-painted photos differs from color photos in the degree and style of color.
You can see her work online at The Old Gallery website, https://www.theoldgallery.org/tog-artists/, or better yet, see them glowing in person at The Old Gallery during the Studio Tour.
