On Friday, June 9, 2023, after the pickle club ended, at 4:15 p.m., 21 attendees joined Recreation Coordinator Connor Robinson and Director Gabrielle Chisholm in a meeting concerning the future of pickleball at the Gilpin County Community Center (GCCC).
Topics covered during the meeting were Silver Sneakers, residents/non-residents, ages, skill level, playing times/ order of games, house rules, blinds, cleaning schedule, and more.
After comparing pickleball clubs around the area, including Nederland, Clear Creek, and Apex, suggestions inspired a brainstorming session, leading to a few changes in the popular sport.
Per the nationwide contract, all Silver Sneakers, Renew Active and Silver&Fit members will continue to receive pickleball benefits. For those without these insurance benefits, drop-in rates or memberships apply to play pickleball.
In addition to the already scheduled pickleball times, there will be a 30-minute practice time before every game. The half-hour lets players practice their swing, techniques, warm up, etc.
Anyone 12 years old and older can join a pickleball game during the week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. A new Saturday time, soon to be determined, will allow families of all ages to play pickleball.
Regardless of the pickleball game you join, the GCCC and established pickleball members request that everyone abide by the following house rules:
• Use only the available three courts
• Only four players per court
• One paddle holder is to be assigned (to keep track of whose turn it is)
• The game is to be played up to 11 if no players are waiting
• The game is to be played up to seven if players are waiting their turn
Should concerns arise, one of the three assigned liaisons will address issues with the Recreation Coordinator of the Gilpin County Parks and Recreation and the Director, pending a suggestion box.
A basic understanding of rules and familiarity with strategies before participating in any game is important. Pickleballer Mike Vincent has put together a set of rules and a beginner video to aid beginners and anyone needing a reminder.
Vincent has also offered to assist during the 30-minute practice times, but if someone requests a beginning lesson outside of scheduled play, he would be happy to coordinate a time with them to do just that.
