The year was 1900 when the Central City Elks Lodge No. 557 was instituted. With more than 120 members, the lodge’s awarded grants go to develop programs serving local youth, veterans, and others in need.
On Saturday, October 28, 2023, the Elks hosted a Halloween dance supporting the Belvidere Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to rehabilitate the Shoofly and Belvidere structures, restoring the social vitality of Central City and Gilpin County.
Both structures, originally two separate buildings, are now physically connected and share a rich history. In 1868, the Shoofly was built as a saloon and dance hall, becoming a staple in the community. It was known for its bar fights and being one of the few buildings to survive the fire of 1874, with a reconstruction of the inside starting immediately after the fire.
A year after the fire, the Belvidere Theater opened its doors. The 450-seat theater attracted famous national performers and made Central City popular for mining, culture, and entertainment.
The town became an attraction for culture-seekers, increasing visitor numbers and inspiring the construction of the larger Central City Opera in 1878. The Belvidere turned into a dance hall, and the Shoofly became the catering partner for dances and classes at the theater.
The Shoofly and Belvidere have undergone many changes throughout the years, accommodating the city’s needs. The Belvidere Foundation’s rehabilitation project hopes to keep the two entities thriving and serving the next generation of residents.
At this year’s Halloween dance a donation of $10 included music, dancing, a spot in the costume contest, and an overall evening of entertainment at the lodge. Guests wore Halloween costumes, danced, drank, laughed, and celebrated the season and the Belvidere Foundation.
The highly spirited night included a costume contest where everyone was a winner, and the younger guests received the contest prizes. Orange and black colors adorned the floor and tables while music pleased all ears. Halloween-themed snacks and decorations were spread across the room, adding to the ambiance and excitement.
