The Gilpin County Library is currently hosting an exhibition showcasing the mesmerizing photography of Samuel E. Howard, a talented artist whose work brings to life the captivating world of steam locomotives. In an exclusive interview, Howard shares his journey, inspirations, and the techniques behind his evocative imagery.

For Howard, photography is a passion that runs deep, cultivated from a young age by his father, who served as his mentor. Fond memories of exploring the craft with his father laid the foundation for Howard's artistic journey, instilling a profound appreciation for the beauty of the natural world and the power of capturing fleeting moments through the lens of a camera.

The transition from film to digital photography in the early 2000s marked a pivotal moment in Howard's career. Embracing the technological advancements of the digital era, he found new avenues for creativity and expression, allowing him to push the boundaries of his artistry and explore innovative techniques to enhance his photographs.

Central to Howard's body of work is his fascination with steam locomotives. Drawing inspiration from the rich history and timeless allure of these majestic machines, Howard seeks to convey their essence through his photography, capturing not just their physical beauty but also the spirit of adventure and nostalgia they evoke.

“When I am not in my gallery, The Caboose Gallery, I usually try to make it to steam events at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden," Howard explains. “They have several events during the year running steam. I also spend a lot of time at the Georgetown Loop RR and other photography events around the state. I like to photograph steam locomotives, and there are a lot of them in this state.”

Howard achieves his breathtaking shots through what’s known as a “charter.” A charter is an event put on by the railroad with about twenty or more photographers. They usually last for one or two days with different photo locations from sunrise to sunset. The Durango/Silverton line hosted winter and fall photo events with themes.

Howard's dedication to his craft extends beyond mere documentation; each of his photographs tells a story, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the scene and experience the sights and sounds of a bygone era. “I print all my work on infused aluminum,” Howard reveals, in order to give his photographs a sense of immediacy and immersion, placing the viewer right in the scene.

A master of composition and light, Howard emphasizes the importance of these elements in creating powerful photographs. From the soft glow of sunrise to the dramatic shadows of a stormy sky, Howard harnesses the power of light to infuse his images with emotion and atmosphere, elevating them from mere snapshots to timeless works of art.

Howard uses two cameras, both Nikons, a D750 and a D850. His lenses range from 14mm through 200mm.

In offering advice to aspiring photographers, Howard stresses the importance of finding one's niche and pursuing it with passion and dedication. He says to definitely work on post processing, and remember composition.

“Get out and take pictures,” he advises, “and above all, have fun.” It is this sense of joy and enthusiasm that permeates Howard's work, inviting viewers to share in his love for photography and the captivating world of steam locomotives.
