We want to let you know that all of Cal-Wood's staff are safe. We are grateful that the Cal-Wood buildings, including the lodge and cabins, are not damaged, and they are currently in use, housing 30+ firefighters. Rafael Salgado, our executive director, has permission to stay on site, and is feeding and taking care of these community heroes.
Cal-Wood staff reported the fire at noon on Saturday. We actively manage our 1,200 acres for fire mitigation, and while we have been preparing for decades, the impact is devastating. The fire is currently 5% contained, but we are hopeful that this weather, and the break from the winds, leads to greater containment.
2020 has been a trying year for Cal-Wood; we have lost 10 of 22 employees, and our revenue has been reduced by 70% with program cancelations. We were struggling to survive the pandemic, and now this.
But our resilience was proven after the huge flood in 2013, and we will prove it again after the pandemic AND the Cal-Wood Fire. We will send another update once we have more information and can assess the extent of the damage.
