The Board of Education of the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) RE2 held a regular meeting on Tuesday, August 8, 2023. All Board Members were present as well as BVSD Superintendent Dr. Rob Anderson and BVSD attorney Kathleen Sullivan. BVSD Board of Education members are: President Kathy Gebhardt (District C), Vice President Lisa Sweeney-Miran (District A), Treasurer Nicole Rajpal (District B), Richard Garcia (District G), Kitty Sargent (District F), Beth Niznik (District E), Stacey Zis (District D).
The Board started with a Work Session at 5 p.m. The first item on the agenda was Board Member Compensation. This discussion has come from Colorado House Bill 21-1055. The Board will continue to study this item, and look at a draft resolution.
The next item was a discussion about the Board voting for CASB’s 2023 resolutions. CASB stands for Colorado Association of School Boards. The ballot will be finalized in September. When that happens the Board will consider revisions to the Policy Platform and then what positions they will take on ballot issues that impact BVSD.
The BVSD Board of Education moved into their Regular Meeting at 6 p.m. Board President Gebhardt opened the meeting and Board Member Niznik presented the BVSD Land Acknowledgement. Gebhardt welcomed everyone and read the District’s Mission.
The first Information Item was a presentation about the roll out of Universal Preschool in Colorado. The decision by Colorado voters to have preschool for all three and four year olds, although well intended, has brought many challenges for the State and for school districts. Legislation HB-1295 has been a challenge and continues to be a challenge to implement throughout Colorado.
The Board and Dr. Anderson shared their heartfelt thanks to the staff, including the community liaisons, for all their dedication and hard work with the new (and often difficult) system.
The next Information Items presented were two Recommendations of Dismissal. At this time they are recommendations. The Board is asked to take the information, but not take any formal action at this time.
During the last Information Item Dr. Anderson said that he has been recommended by Colorado Senator Fenberg to sit on the Statewide Accountability Taskforce.
The Board then moved to several Action Items. There were some questions for clarifications. All items were approved.
Next, the Board looked at making some language changes to some of their policies. These changes are due to Colorado Legislative changes. This discussion was led by Sullivan who fielded many questions by the Board. The Board gave feedback and Sullivan will come back at the next meeting with updates.
The meeting adjourned at approximately 8 p.m.
