Business Short Takes: Vinyl boogies into town

Posted

John Scarffe, Nederland. A community college biology instructor has opened a new vinyl record and turntable shop in Nederland. Ryan Blackwell, a Nederland resident for two years, has opened Boogie Records at 34 E. First Street #3 below the Deli.

Blackwell said he opened three months ago, and his shop sells exclusively vinyl records and turntables right now. He has more than 2,000 new and used records in his shop and is expecting another shipment of 500 records next week.

He also has people in the area bringing in crates of records. Blackwell is a music lover, and he moved to Nederland from Boulder two years ago.

It has been a lifelong dream for Blackwell to have his own business, and this space became available. Nederland doesn’t have a good record store, Blackwell said.

“This is the perfect space for a record store,” Blackwell said. His business has been better than expected. “I pinch myself every day for being able to play records and talk music all day long. It’s a dream come true.”

Blackwell has been teaching biology for 12 years. He previously taught in Seattle and was a cancer researcher for 12 years. Most recently he teaches at the Front Range Community College in Westminster. “I absolutely love and care to relate to the students,” he said.

Since he works at the Community College, hours for the record shop are Thursday through Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. He receives about 50 new records per week, and he has 100 comedy albums coming with artists such as Steve Martin and Cheech and Chong, which move very fast.

Boogie on in for your vinyl records at Boogie Records, 34 E. First Street, below the Deli.
