Brewing beer for 15 decades

Many ask why beer is so abundant in Colorado. We have the gold rush to thank for that. During the mid-19th century, beer didn’t travel or store well, inspiring brewers to make their products locally and on demand.

Fast forward to 2023, and it’s easy to find a brewery in almost every city and town in the state, including Central City, Colorado, where beer has been brewing for more than 150 years. How does the city celebrate? With The Great Central City Beer Festival, of course.

On Saturday, August 26, between 1 and 6 p.m., Main Street turned into a bubbly and refreshing spot to hang out. Visitors tasted some of the area’s craft and micro beers while listening to music and smelling the sweet scent of hops and local food.

The Very Nice Brewing Company, Howlin Wind, and Dostal Alley were among the local favorite breweries represented during the beer fest. Cannonball Creek Brewing, Mountain Toad Brewing, New Terrain Brewing, Barrels & Bottles Brewery, and Over Yonder Brewing were among the breweries from Golden.

Idaho Springs released the goblins from the mines, as Tommyknocker Brewery enticed beer enthusiasts with stories from within its many cans. Other breweries included Colorado Native, Sandlot Brewery, Front Range Hops, Ceria, Ohm Brewing, Ration Beerworks, Bierstadt Lager, Cabin Creek, and EBC.

The bands Seeing Stars and Jewel & The Rough entertained guests on the main stage. VIP ticket holders partook in a noon admission, including a private VIP tent experience, appetizers, and entertainment by Jimmy Lewis & Friends.

As folks flowed up and down Central City’s Main Street, so did the music, smiles, laughter, and crafted masterpieces that make Colorado and this city popular.

Brewing beer involves malting, milling, mashing, extract separation, hop addition and boiling, removal of hops and precipitates, cooling and aeration, fermentation, separation of yeast from young beer, aging, maturing, and packaging.

The result of this entire process is the pleasurable feeling many get from the hard work of brewers and their staff. So, next time you enjoy a beer (or maybe two), don’t forget to think about how that beer got into that glass, bottle, or can, and remember to thank your local brewmasters.
