Breaking down the tax increase amounts

Posted

Dear Editor,

We have lived in Gilpin County for only five years, and have made it our retirement home. In these years, we have made dozens of friends through the Gilpin Seniors lunches and events. We have so enjoyed keeping healthy at the Center by swimming and walking the track. The friendships we have made here are close and like family.

That Community Center is the heart of our county...it’s where we have our Annual Gilpin Fair, fundraiser dinners for the Fire Dept., Seniors events, craft fairs, flea markets, after-school programs for kids, and on and on. If you haven’t stepped foot on that campus, please do...once we reopen!

We are not people who vote for tax increases. Why? Because like many others, we have always believed our government should live within it’s budget. This is different. The pandemic shut our county down. The money stopped. The faucet shut off. The casinos were closed.

We are offering to help our Gilpin neighbors figure out approximately what the three-year tax increase will mean for YOU, on your property. How about we meet in the park? By that we mean we invite you to meet us at the picnic shelter in Dory Lakes Park (Columbine Park) between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday, October 1. We will offer annother round between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2020. We will use the calculator the County posted on their website, and figure the approximate amount of increase you will pay if we should get this proposal passed. You need only bring with you the most recent tax information you received from the Gilpin County Assessor’s office. We will do our best to give you the approximate numbers, so that you can make an informed decision. Facts are powerful. Information is power.

We are just Gilpin residents who figured our proposed tax increase, and it’s much less than we feared! It’s worth getting the heart of the County beating again...in our humble opinions.

If we can help, just drive on over and leave with numbers that will help you make an informed decision on November 3.

We hope to meet you next week!
