John Scarffe, Nederland. At their regular meeting on August 19, the Town of Nederland Board of Trustees approved revisions to the Town Code regarding inoperable vehicles. Town Administrator Alisha Reis said the issue arose after Code Enforcer Frank Goodard found many misinterpretations of the code.
He drafted a few changes. The ordinance amends Chapter 7 of the Municipal Code to adjust the definition of “inoperable vehicles” and to clarify regulations related to them, as directed by the Board at its meeting of July 1.
Additionally, the Board said the code as written gave tacit encouragement to the community to park vehicles in yard spaces. The Board requested that the ordinance be rewritten with options for the amount of time an inoperable vehicle (indefinitely, 30 or 90 days) may be maintained on a property.
Those options are contained in the ordinance and need to be decided by the Board. The nuisance code (Chapter 7) was first adopted by the Board via Ordinance 84 in 1948, first enumerating nuisances in the community. The nuisance code was subsequently amended a number of times over the years.
The Board approved the ordinance revising the Town code with one vehicle being allowed indefinitely and a second one approved if in a garage. Mayor Pro-Tem Peter Fiori voted against the ordinance.
The next meeting of the Nederland Board of Trustees will be on Tuesday, September 2, at 7 p.m. in the Nederland Community Center, 750 Highway 72, Nederland. For more information about the Nederland Board of Trustees meeting, go online and see other articles in the next edition of The Mountain-Ear.
