Around 8:15 Tuesday morning, a backpack was found in front of the Nederland Police Department. It was determined that the backpack contained suspicious material and the Tebo Shopping Center was evacuated immediately.
Mutual aid was requested and the Boulder Bomb Squad and the Louisville, Longmont and Boulder Hazmat Team arrived at the scene, setting up a command post at the lodge across from the shopping center parking lot.
The entire shopping center was cordoned off and Nederland officers and Boulder County deputies as well as Nederland Public Works employees set up traffic stops, not allowing anyone into the area.
Around 2 p.m. a Bomb Squad robot was sent into the police department and it transported the backpack to the middle of the parking lot where the pack was x-rayed.
Samples of the substance in the backpack were retrieved and as of 6:30 p.m. investigators are working on identifying the contents of the backpack.
It is not known when the businesses in the shopping center will be able to reopen.
