Mindy Leary, Gilpin County. On Tuesday, June 23, 2020, the Gilpin County Board of County Commissioners met for their regular meeting online at 9 a.m. Commissioners Gail Watson, Linda Isenhart and Ron Engels were in attendance, as were County Manager Abel Montoya and County Attorney Bradford Benning. The highlights included a Covid-19 update, a liquor license renewal and a land use comprehensive plan update.

Emergency Manager Nate Whittington, Head of EOC (Emergency Operations Control), recently helped with elections by getting needed supplies and helped Human Services shuttle food.
Public Health Coordinator Bonnie Albrecht said there are still six cases and five more tests today. She’s been working with casinos, which have been open and working hard to follow all the restrictions.
Albrecht has also been working with Strategy 360 which partners with non-profits in 14 counties to increase census outreach. For instance, they can supply 200 landlines for cold-calling since the pandemic has had to change how the census reaches people.
There is also a text message service that would allow one person to send 2-3,000 people a text message. An average household of two brings $23,000 in federal funding so the benefit is high. The board unanimously passed a motion to invest $275-$375 for the text messaging part of census outreach program.
Deputy Clerk Sharon Cate presented an annual liquor license renewal for Coyote Liquors. All paperwork was in order and a motion was passed unanimously to renew the license.
Community Development Director Stephen Strohminger presented the land use comprehensive plan update. The public engagement phase includes a community workshop meeting which is today, June 23 from 6-7:30 p.m. and can be accessed via gilpincounty.org.
Community Surveys are live in the field and concern drafting the county’s vision statement. The next planning commission meeting will be on July 14 with the third community workshop on August 25.
