Baking competition serves a slice of life

Posted

On Friday, September 15, starting at around 5 p.m., bakers of all backgrounds brought their tastiest treats to Very Nice Brewing Company (VNBC) for a friendly competition, and all to raise funds for the Nederland Food Pantry.

Contestants entered their breads, cakes, cookies, pies, and preserves, which were later served to a panel of judges, with each baker being kept anonymous. Judges Natalie Duplessy of Peace Love and Cake, volunteer firefighter for the Nederland Fire Department Tara Sergo, and Tim Dillon and Lori Lindberg of the Nederland Food Pantry tasted over 18 entries and rated them based on appropriate texture, taste, consistency, and overall impression.

Windy Pines wooed the crowd with their infectious bluegrass style, playing old classics and new originals that filled VNBC’s taproom with the warm sense of being at home, surrounded by your friends and loved ones. The taste of fresh baked indulgences married perfectly with the lovingly crafted beer, and all of it combined made the atmosphere magic, which elicited smiles and laughter.

Kendra Trauth won first place in the bread category with her perfect sourdough; Barbara Hardt nabbed second place with her addictively tasty garlic and cheese beer bread.

In the cake category Ashtynn Trauth won first place with her play on a cinnamon roll in cupcake form; and in the cookie category Tanya Unger won first place with her big chocolate and toffee cookie.

Margie Yansura took first place with her silky salted chocolate ganache pie, and Susan Green won second place with her delicious sweet potato pie. In the preserves category Barbara Hardt won first place with a raspberry preserve, with Susan Green winning second place with her peach preserve.

All contestants were asked to supply two of each of their entries, so after the winners were announced the packed crowd were enticed to make donations to the Nederland Food Pantry and enjoy a taste of the goodies provided.

Thanks go to VNBC, Windy Pines, and to all the bakers for actively crafting the ideal environment and creating a truly amazing evening, one infused with a heartwarming communal spirit that can only be cultivated up here in the mountains.
