Back to school: Bus safety

Now that school is in session watch for students walking to school and at the bus stops. Motorists have responsibilities to help keep kids safe.

• Drive slowly: Watch for children walking along the street, especially if there are no sidewalks.

• Watch for students gathering near school bus stops.

• Be alert for students arriving late at a bus stop; they will be in a hurry.

• Yellow flashing lights on a bus means the bus is preparing to stop and load or unload students. Motorists need to slow down and prepare to stop.

• Red flashing lights and extended stop arm means the bus has stopped and students are boarding or exiting the bus. Motorists must come to a complete stop a safe distance from the bus and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the arm is retracted, and the bus begins moving before the motorist can start driving again.

Students, parents, bus drivers, school staff, and the community all have a responsibility to keep kids safe. Keep your eyes open and drive carefully. There is precious cargo on the school buses -- our children.
