GILPIN COUNTY - Axe & Snax was founded in 2019 as a non-profit that does fire mitigation work and firewood services for their neighbors in Gilpin County. They are committed to the joy of helping their neighbors with these vital survival tasks.
This volunteer organization clears clears vegetation and creates defensible space in the community. The work they do for others is immensely valuable, since they are committed to helping neighbors who need help with fire mitigation and firewood needs.
For some years now Axe & Snax has hosted a log splitting contest at the Gilpin County Fair. After this popular fair competition, the split wood is given to residents in need of firewood to keep warm during the winter.
For 2025, the top four finishers were Matthew Schillinger, James Peterson, Thomas Bulloch, and Austin Scobee.
Also this year, at the Gilpin County Fair, United Power presented Axe & Snax with a check for $3000 to help them continue their excellent work in the mountain communities.
The "Snax" part of the name comes from the bountiful meals provided to the volunteers by the community.
