Studio Tour: Annie Thayer

Posted

NEDERLAND - Watercolorist Annie Thayer exhibits her quiet but imaginative paintings at Nederland’s Spinning Silica gallery.

Thayer has taken her lived experience traveling to remote places, and combined that with her “inner landscapes of memory and imagination” to create what she calls the “spontaneous beauty of watercolor with a sense of quiet story and place.”

Some of her paintings are rooted in specific places she’s explored, while others arise from her imagination or from “fragments of feeling.” She thinks of herself as a storyteller, inviting the viewer to “linger, listen, and wonder what might happen next.” Thayer believes that in a world of fast images there is value in an art that requires you to slow down.

She turned to watercolor because she loves its wild and unpredictable nature as she portrays the quiet, beautiful places she finds in the surrounding mountains and imagined “far-off villages that inspire what she describes as “the stories we carry within.” Her work evokes memory, mood, or “a sense of something just beyond the visible.”

Thayer emphasizes that she’s always chasing feelings of stillness, wonder, or connection as she leaves space in her work for the viewer to feel it, too.

You can explore her work at www.anniethayerart.com and see it in person at Spinning Silica, 20 Lakeview Drive, #208, Nederland, Colorado.
