Please join us for our annual Art at the Center Demo Show on Thursday, June 16 from 4 - 7 p.m. at the Nederland Community Center. Please note the 4 p.m. start time, in order to give everyone a chance to try their hand at painting and also see the other demos which will be going on at the same time.
Greg Marquez, a Nederland area artist with vast experience in watercolors, drawing, acrylics, and woodworking, will be leading a watercolor workshop for those interested in learning more about watercolor and animal painting. He will demonstrate the basics of drawing a horse and then lead you through the process of how to create the texture and depth of the animal with watercolor. He will have a couple of horse references from which to choose.
Everyone is welcome to join Marquez any time between 4 - 7 p.m., but to complete the drawing and painting, you will want to come early. Watercolor paper will be supplied, and paint and brushes will be available to use during the demo time. Wear old clothes or bring an apron or smock to cover your clothes. This demo will be appropriate for all ages from 10 and older, up to the young at heart.
Four non-interactive artist demos will also be taking place between 4 - 7 p.m. Wolfy with watercolor, Evan Cantor with oil, Brent Warren with drawing/cartooning, and the artistic duo of Roxana Astemborski and John Shively.
Wolfy will be doing a demo in watercolor, and is known for his beautiful, intricate, and nostalgic paintings of scenes in and around Nederland. He has been creating watercolor paintings for over thirty- eight years, starting with landscapes, and expanding into dreamscapes and abstractions. His dry brush and saturation techniques give his paintings bright colors that are often mistaken for oil or acrylic. Wolfy has made Nederland his home since 2015, and often shows his work at Art at the Center. His artistic influences include Frida Kahlo and Alex Grey to mention just two. Wolfy also has paintings at the recently opened Kaleidoscope Fine Arts Gallery in Nederland. Come watch Wolfy paint his starry nights in watercolor with pre-painted examples done in stages.
Evan Cantor will be painting in oil, andisalong-timeColoradowilderness artist, celebrating the beauty and spirit of nature. Conservationists recall his scratchboards in Wild Earth and High Country News. His images have appeared in numerous magazines and books. Most recently, his work graced the covers of “ReWilding Earth Unplugged,” Nederland’s Mountain Pages and the Boulder Daily Camera’s Friday Magazine.
Cantor’s exhibitions include the Arts & Letters Club of Toronto, NCAR, pARTiculars gallery in Lafayette, and R-Gallery in Boulder. He is a member of the Temagami 22, a collection of North American artists concerned with environmental preservation. He was honored by the Southern Rockies Conservation Alliance for his “outstanding contribution” to wilderness preservation in Colorado.
Brent Warren will be demonstrating both ink pen drawings and scratchboard creations. Over the years, Warren has explored many different art mediums, and is self-taught in the mediums of sketching, acrylic painting, sculpture, photography, and digital composition. His work tends to be whimsical, surreal, and absurd. For him, the joy comes from seeing an idea emerge from a beginning spark to an original finale. Warren has six black pen ink cartoon drawings in this current show.
Roxana Astemborski and John Shively will be demonstrating an improvisational painting duet. Astemborski is a mountain girl and Shively lives in Boulder. Shively earned an M.F.A. in 1981 from CU and was an Adjunct Professor at DU for the 1982 winter and spring semesters. He then became a creative recluse. Until he met Astemborski. Astemborski paints as a process of mind and relationship. In their duet, Astemborski has the ideas and Shively renders them.
The interactive class and demos will be held in the multipurpose room at the Nederland Community Center. Refreshments will be staged in the upstairs lobby. New and returning artists will be showing their work and will be available in the hallways to talk with you about their art. Please join us to visit with the artists and create your own fabulous painting. We hope to see you there between 4 - 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 16.
