The Ameristar Casino in Black Hawk was back to their in-person catered holiday luncheon for seniors at the Gilpin Community Center on December 14, 2022, at noon. Mary Ellen Makosky, Senior Services/ Transportation Supervisor for the County, said about 70 seniors attended the luncheon.
Makosky said this was the first year the luncheon has been served in-person since COVID. The last two years they had carry-out.
The Community Center was set with tables, and a crew of Ameristar employees were ready to dish out the food. Before noon, seniors were finding their places at the tables.
Makosky welcomed all the seniors to the luncheon. She said the senior luncheons have become bigger, and with better food. She said the County is grateful for you, the seniors; and for Ameristar.
Seniors lined up and went through the buffet that included fish, ham, potatoes, and vegetables. They filled the Community Center meeting room.
New County Commissioner Marie Mornis attended with her husband Steve. She said she likes bringing new couples to the dinners, especially those who can’t drive.
Candace Johnson with Gilpin County served water, tea, and lemonade. Ameristar’s Director of Operations helped oversee the dinner.
Staff left a note on the seniors’ plates, saying they will be hosting senior luncheons two days a week. They asked that interested persons please RSVP two business days ahead of time.
The Gilpin Senior Services crew also provide door-to-door medical transportation and weekly grocery shopping trips. Rides to lunch, events, and medical appointments are available to Gilpin County seniors. Call direct at 303-515-4292 for reservations.
