The birth of Ride the Rockies occurred in 1986. More than 1,500 cyclists participated in the six-day cross-state bicycle tour. Riders come from all over the world to participate in Ride the Rockies.
The event’s popularity increased drastically. By 1987, only the first 2,000 registered cyclists were permitted to participate. More and more riders showed interest in riding the Rockies. By 1989, a lottery registration system was implemented.
In 2001, Ride the Rockies began giving back to the communities of the hosting towns by providing grants to nonprofit organizations providing services to low-income children and youth. Over $585,000 has been presented to nonprofits in nearly 50 Colorado communities.
From roughly 300 miles to over 500 miles, Ride the Rockies has taken the Colorado Rocky Mountains by storm since its inception. This year, Ride the Rockies will take place between June 11 and June 16.
Registered bicyclists will gather in Fort Collins, riding through Estes Park, around Allenspark, and into Rocky Mountain National Park on Trail Ridge Road into Grand Lake, Winter Park, and Gilpin County until they reach their end destination, returning to Fort Collins.
The ride is divided into six stages, allowing the riders to take breaks and prepare for the next day’s challenges. The 303-mile ride will include thousands of feet in elevation gain and personal rewards.
There is no lottery for the 2023 Ride The Rockies. Registration is open and is first come, first serve until capacity is reached. Roads will remain open to vehicles, but please remember to be kind and share the road.
When you are in Nederland, do not forget you can stop by Tin Shed Sports for all your cycling needs. There’s often a 2-3 day turnaround on services, so give yourself ample time to prepare.
