Barbara Lawlor, Nederland. On a dusty parking lot, under a tent, a group of elegantly dressed—some of them—Nederland residents clinked glasses of wine and nibbled on fancy finger food.
It was a classy affair.
It was the Nederland Community Center Foundation's third annual fundraiser held in the NCC back parking lot on Sunday, August 17. They had a warm, sunny, perfect mountain day for the outside event. The Ned Wine Fest is the source of funding to upgrade the Center, to pay for a new marquee, a commercial kitchen, and new tables and chairs.
The money goes to make community events possible, to guarantee the senior citizens a place to have a healthy, social event twice a week. It allows Art at the Center to offer refreshments during its opening night receptions and it helps the Center maintain its community-based event venue.
While guests tasted some of the 40 different wines, swirling, sniffing, sipping, and swallowing gracefully, they listened to the Defunkt Railroad band, bringing back some memories and setting a light-hearted, lively tone to the afternoon.
The Wine Fest was sponsored by Dam Liquor. Store manager Scott Havnes recruited the wine representatives who provided tastings for some 40 wines. Dam Liquor also donated two choice bottles of wine, a large helmet-filled Broncos mirror, and a gift certificate.
The Wine Fest was coordinated by Jennifer Davis, who was also the chef for the delicious appetizers. The silent and live auctions were coordinated by Jilene Norman and Tracy Brewer. Jilene also managed the media advertising and finances.
Charles Wood and Ledge Long handled tickets at the entrance and helped set up and take down tents, tables and chairs. Alex Mustain, Michael Robillard, Sam Churches, Luke Harrison, and David Norman also helped with the tents, chairs and tables. Dale Porter took care of the permits and liquor control.
The new feature this year was a live auction, a big hit due to the professional leadership of local MC and auctioneer Campbell Dawson.
Each year the Wine Fest has grown and brought in more donations. It is an enjoyable, lip-smacking, tongue titillating, gracious, sociable way to enjoy Nederland and it will be back next year.
