The definition of rebound, according to the Oxford dictionary, is to “bounce back through the air after hitting a hard surface or object.” This is kind of what happened for Starla and Eric, literally and metaphorically.
Starla Carr and Eric Yahl first met at the Nederland Middle/High School about 20 years ago. They were only twelve or thirteen at the time and had a couple of classes together but never really dated or anything. Eric ended up switching schools to Gilpin.
But when they were in middle school and attending the same class, something funny and fateful occurred.
Starla said, “Eric was playing with a rubber band on his school desk sitting behind me. The rubber band snapped and went into my hair! The rubber band got so tangled that I had to cut it out of my hair! I wasn’t very happy about that,” as she laughed aloud.
Life moved on from there and after both going through break-ups, they met again in Nederland.
“We decided to go play some pool at the P.I. (the old Pioneer Inn) and have basically been inseparable ever since! We were going to get married back in 2020, but due to Covid, we had to postpone things,” said Starla.
The two seemed destined to be together as their love rebounded twenty years after middle school and through other trials and life paths. Now their path is one.
They have been together for eight years. Starla has three children from a previous relationship and, together with Eric, has another child, Skyla, who is five.
They have both lived in Gilpin County for over thirty years, the majority of their lives. They bought a house together in the county and enjoy common interests like camping, monster truck shows, and fishing.
Starla tends bar in the local area and you have probably seen her if you ever made it into the now closed Mineshaft, formerly the Branding Iron, formerly the First Street Grill and Bar.
They also own a business together fixing small engines like snow blowers, wood splitters, 4-wheelers, and generators. Their local business, ENS Repair, can be reached at 720-656-2789.
When asked what they do on Valentine’s Day, Starla replied, “We usually cook up a good meal together, and spend the evening together. We couldn’t be happier in our lives.”
This has been a true tale of love on the mountain.
