A glimpse at Nederland's Class of 2020: Graduating senior heads to MIT

Posted

Lisa Ezra, Nederland. Nederland Middle Senior High School is proud to have amongst its ranks a graduating senior bound for MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Hakan Chunton set his sights on the elite university after developing a strong interest in Computer Science early in his academic career. Everyone knows that MIT is home to some of the brightest minds in the country and regularly admits a mere fraction of its applicants. Acceptance to the institution is no small feat. Chunton’s absolute excellence in all aspects of Nederland Middle Senior High School life propelled him to the top of the applicant pile. With a weighted GPA of 4.571 and an SAT score well over 1500, Chunton was academically up to par.

It wasn’t merely Chunton’s academic prowess that inspired the admissions team. He shared his knowledge by tutoring his fellow students in science and math and served outdoors as a Youth Corp Junior Supervisor for Teens, Inc. Chunton also participated in FHS Robotics and Student Council. He ran for both NMSHS Cross Country and Track and Field teams and spent two years as a representative for the District Technology Advisory Committee.

His academic and sports awards were numerous, including but not limited to: Distinguished Honor Roll, Most Improved (Track and Field), Panther Award (Cross Country), Most Inspirational (Band), Award of Excellence (Geometry, Advanced Biology, Advanced Algebra 2, AP Physics 1), Leadership, Academic All-State, Colorado School of Mines’ Medal of Achievement in Math and Science, Academic Letter (four years), Cross Country Letter (three years), Robotics Letter (four years), and Track & Field Letter (three years).

Chunton credits the outstanding teacher and staff support at NMSHS for being integral to his success. Especially Scott Feels and Rovenna Yakubov, whose generosity of both time and energy (and letters of recommendation!) were integral to Chunton’s achievement of his goals. According to this outstanding student, “MIT has always been a dream.”
